The Golden Ghost of the Plains
With its striking, rich golden-red coat and oversized ears, the Steenbok is one of the most beautiful and frequently encountered dwarf antelopes in Africa. Unlike the thicket-loving duikers, Steenbok prefer open savannas and grasslands. They are highly alert and rely heavily on lying completely flat in tall grass to avoid detection, exploding from under a hunter’s feet only when absolutely necessary.
Overview & Demographics
- Average Mature Ram Weight: 25 – 35 lbs (11 – 16 kg)
- Shoulder Height: 20 – 24 inches (50 – 60 cm)
- Lifespan: 7 – 10 years in the wild
- Primary Habitat: Open plains, semi-desert savannas, and dry grasslands. They are mostly independent of surface water, getting moisture from roots and tubers.
- Trophy Characteristics: Only rams have horns, which are smooth, very straight, and exceptionally sharp. The SCI minimum score for a Steenbok is 4.5 inches.
Trophy Evaluation & Identification
Trophy Evaluation & Identification Text to paste: Field judging a Steenbok requires looking at the length of the horns compared to the ears. Because their ears are disproportionately large, a ram whose horns reach or exceed the halfway point of the ear is considered a solid trophy. A truly exceptional ram will have horns that reach the tips of the ears.
Habitat & Hunting Tactics
Most Steenbok are taken as targets of opportunity while tracking larger plains game. When flushed, they will typically run in a straight line for 50 to 100 meters, abruptly stop, and turn broadside to look back. This is the hunter’s crucial window. Being prepared on the shooting sticks and able to acquire the small target quickly before it bolts again is the key to success.
Firearm & Caliber Requirements
- The Ideal Caliber: Small centerfire rifles like the .223 Remington, .22-250, or .243 Winchester are ideal.
- Ammunition Warning: If taking a Steenbok with a heavier plains game rifle (like a .30-06), the use of non-expanding solid bullets is strictly required to prevent destroying the delicate cape.
- Optics: A standard 3-9x variable scope is perfect for the open-country ranges they are typically shot at.
Steenbok Anatomical Shot Placement
Broadside – Ideal: Trace the back of the front leg straight up, aiming exactly one-third of the way up the body mass. The vital zone is incredibly small, so a rock-steady rest is absolutely required.
